Alignment in Your Mental Health

What does living in alignment mean?

Alignment is when our life lines up to our values. It means we are living the way we want, even if we do not have everything we want. Our daily experience feels sustainable and our choices, actions, and overall flow of life feels true to the kind of life we want to live.

Practically, alignment can look like:

  • Our physical needs are met - including our needs for sleep, proper nutrition, and exercise

  • Though stress and difficulties arise, we feel that we have what we need to tackle most stressful situations.

  • We feel supported by those around us.

  • Most days, we are present in our bodies and not looking to escape our daily lives.

  • Our bodies are able to rest when we need it. Our minds can be still.

What are signs you are out of alignment?

Alignment for everyone may look differently. However, being out of alignment typically looks similar in most people. When we are out of alignment, we may find it difficult to find peace and rest and it is hard to slow down. Often our busy schedules make it difficult to live in alignment. We are exhausted, drained, disconnected and may find ourselves doing things to feel better like drinking a few glasses of wine or scrolling on social media for too long. We may be ruminating on past or present concerns.

Practically being out of alignment can look like:

  • Chronic physical symptoms such as stomach aches and headaches

  • Difficulty sleeping despite feeling exhausted

  • Feeling frozen - like we cannot make decisions or move forward in life

  • Minor inconveniences feel overwhelming

  • We feel disconnected and a lack of support from our communities and families

  • Experiencing anxiety and hopelessness most days

  • Difficulty setting and keeping boundaries

How can therapy help?

The hope for clients who work with us is that they would leave therapy feeling like they are more aligned with themselves - more at peace, more connected to themselves and others - and able to make the kinds of choices they want to live a fulfilling life. This first requires self awareness.

Together, we will do a full assessment of your life and gain clarity on what is holding you back from living the way you want. It may be past trauma, disconnection from your body and its needs, or symptoms like anxiety and depression. Nervous system regulation can help us bring our bodies into alignment by moving us out of chronic stress and into greater well being - emotionally, mentally, and physically.
